Omar Friday,a resident of Lincoln County, had been unemployed since August 2014." After losing his sponsorship from a commercial trucking program due to a medical issue,he decided to visit the NCWorks Career Center-Lincoln." During a meeting with a Talent Development Consultant (TDC) at a WIA Intensive Orientation in Lincolnton,he felt disappointed and apprehensive about the future." The TDC understood his concern and encouraged him to set new goals and try again.
Friday was very focused on achieving his goal of becoming a commercial truck driver." He knew what he wanted to accomplish, but he had very little time to get it done since he was unemployed and being supported by family members." Other than his high school diploma from Lincoln High School, the 44 year old had no formalized training.
The TDC Supervisor at the NCWorks Career Center-Lincoln engaged the Director of Trans-Tech Truck Driving School and the Center Leader for the NCWorks Career Center-Lincoln,who both had personal experience with trucking equipment." Together, their collaborative efforts made it possible for Friday to begin training on December 29,2014." Although there were some missed opportunities along the way,Friday completed training and received his Certificate of Completion and CDL Licenses from Trans-Tech Driving School.
In February 2015,Friday gained full-time employment with Star Trucking based out of Tennessee." Since his hire date,Friday has traveled to 30 states and absolutely loves his job." When asked how things are going now he said,"I am excited and happy, thanks to the NCWorks Career Center-Lincoln.""
